You get what you pay for
This review is of a 4D/N trip on the MV Camic, April 2024. Before you read any further, if you have a problem with small roaches on the boat, stop reading now and finds another boat. First, the good: • Food was excellent, however there were no desserts (cakes, pies, pastries, etc.) • AC in the room worked well. No other AC on the boat. • The rental equipment was good although several divers had the tank slide out of their BCD during the dive. • The crew was very helpful. • Cold beer is available for 70 THB. • The ensuite is a wet bath with plenty of hot water. • The dive briefings covered all the essentials without being boring. • The crew rinses and hangs your skins/wetsuit after each dive. • Good ice machine. • The hotel pickup and dropoff service was very good. Now, the not so good: • The boat is relatively clean, but looks tired. Needs some cosmetic work. • No place to store your luggage. I shared my bunk with my suitcase. • The bottom bunk is literally on the floor. If you have difficulty getting up and down, this may be a problem. The mattress is thin and not comfortable. Provided a nice pillow and blanket. • Your given one towel for the trip. • After the dive briefing, the first group has about 10 minutes before entering the water or inflatable raft. No time for another cup of coffee or even a bathroom visit. Seemed very rushed to me. I’m older so I naturally move a little slower but mistakes are made when being rushed. If you like moving slow, ask to be assigned to the second group. • On the 5 previous liveaboard trips I’ve taken, there was always a time of introducing the crew and guests. Not on this trip; I never saw the Captain. • The upper deck is partially-covered, but there are no chairs. There are foam mats on the floor which is where some of the crewmembers sleep at night. The only place to sit on the boat is in the dining area. There is an old adage that you get what you pay for. This is certainly applicable to the Camic. It is a good trip for the budget-minded but manage your expectations and you won’t be disappointed.

The beautiful and spectacular Similan Islands. Been many places Scuba Diving but the number and variety of sea life can't be equaled anywhere in the world

Good overall but the diving was disappointing
The liveaboard booking service was excellent throughout. Would definitely use it again. Very placid seas, very good dive equipment, boat and cabin were comfortable. The Swedish couple mentioned in previous reviews are not currently running the trips as they are stuck outside Thailand during COVID. But the Thai man in charge heads the team well. Despite the description 'On the upper deck is an indoor lounge area with LCD TV, DVD, VCD, and MP3 player.' - there isn't anything on the upper deck except a few old beanbags. We requested the wooden master cabin well in advance but didn't get it. The food was very mediocre and the worst part of the trip. Mostly Thai food which wasn't even that good; the international food consisted of frozen frankfurter sausages and a chicken burger. The crew member who helped us pack up at the end only packed one of my booties and they never did find the other, despite us following up for days. The diving was not as exciting as expected; very few large fish and we dove two sites three times each; also the visibility was mostly quite poor (<5-10m) and at all but one site there were strong currents. Shame.

Amazing Diving with Exceptional Dive Masters
Dennis and the rest of the Dive masters are amazing. They have 20+ years experience on the reefs and are extremely committed to giving the divers the best experience possible. The food on the boat is amazing and after every dive we were thrilled to see what the Chef has prepared for us! Although the cabins and bathrooms make you miss your home, the amazing crew, terrific dives, and mouthwatering food make this a stupendous liveaboard experience !!

MV Camic is a great Similans experience
The dive guides aboard Camic — Dennis and Tik — have been diving the Similans & Surin islands for 20 years, so no guides have more experience or understanding of the dive sites on this route than they do. Dennis ran advanced open water and nitrox courses for some divers on our trip; it’s clear he loves to teach and prioritizes safety. His students seemed to learn a great deal and enjoy working with him. This is a professional and smooth operation. The rental gear is in great condition, the cabins are clean, the food is excellent. Camic has a large top deck with plenty of space to lounge in the shade or in the sun. It caters to only 14 divers so there is none of the crowding or chaos of other Similans options. We had a great trip and I would gladly dive again aboard Camic.

Great diving, great food!
The diving was excellent. Richelieu rock is a very special place! But all of the dives were good. Just note that you'll dive some of the sites multiple times, which won't be for everyone. Pan was a great guide, and it was nice to be with people with similar air consumption. The staff are vey friendly and the food is fantastic (assuming you like Thai food) — the best of any of the five liveaboards I've been on. The only negatives really relate to the boat itself. The dining setup is weird — rather than having one big area where everyone sits together, there are lots of small tables, so people can be siloed, which isn't ideal. There's also no indoor communal space, although this wasn't really a problem as it was quite a short trip. The cabins each have AC and have beds with very firm mattresses, but they were fine. Very good value, so definitely recommended!
