Highlights

  • Become part of the crew sailing the Arctic
  • Visit undiscovered places of breathtaking beauty
  • See the Aurora Borealis as the first explorers did

The s/v Noorderlicht is a 46m 2-masted schooner offering exciting adventure cruises to the east of Greenland and the west coast of Spitzbergen all year round. Built in 1910, she is now perfectly suited to explore the Arctic. The SV Noorderlicht caters to just 20 passengers in 10 twin-bunk cabins. Each cabin has storage space, a washbasin with hot & cold water, and shared bathroom facilities conveniently located on the cabin deck. As can be expected of a historic sailing vessel, the SV Noorderlicht is cozy yet basic, with an indoor bar, lounge and dining area, and deck space, a great spot for whale watching and taking in the spectacular views.

Vintage and comfortable sailboat

The Noorderlicht is a 100-year-old ship, converted into a two-masted schooner, larger and more comfortable than it might seem at first. Sailing is not always possible, and it is an interesting experience for passengers, who can participate in the tasks of lowering and hoisting the sails, but it can also be uncomfortable due to the ups and downs of the sea. The food was of good quality (at dinner) but scarce in quantity, somewhat rationed, and with very little variety at breakfast (bread with butter and jam and yogurt with cereals). Some dietary restrictions were not clearly addressed until well into the trip. There were reasonably priced drinks on board for what is Norway, but we were disappointed to see that... there was no rum! The specialty beers from the Longyearbyen brewery more than compensated for this. The crew was very friendly at all times and the guides were excellent, doing their job professionally but always trying to contribute something more and looking to make the excursions more interesting. The route at the end of August (Arctic Fall) is perhaps not the most appropriate for a first visit to Svalbard. The Bellsundfjords are rarely visited and the boat is really the only one that passes through, but going south instead of north (where most of the ice and local wildlife are) makes animal sightings much more limited than going north. Another decision that we did not share was not to visit, as the program did make explicit, the cities of Barentsburg or Pyramiden "for political reasons", understanding that Svalbard is an international area and that Pyramiden is still an abandoned city that is also a cultural relic. The trip was practically "saved" by the sighting of a polar bear on the last day; That afternoon we also sailed on a glacier and saw puffins and belugas up close; It really was a memorable day and I wish the rest of the days we could have had such intense and sustained experiences.

A dream cruise with magnificent landscapes and beautiful encounters

Full!- the approach to glaciers- the time of encounter with walruses- the piano "mini concert" in the auditorium in Pyramiden- Shore hikes- the time to set sail (unfortunately not often enough)

Recommended for
Adaptability of the program according to opportunities (animals, environment, presentations, etc.) and weather/quality of the service (crew, guides, boat)/the reality of climate change
